Xws7ámeshqen: Final Activity - translate a story
(How the Lummi People Came to Their Present Location And How They Got Their Name, From chap. 11, 'Introduction to the Lummi Language,' by Al Charles, Prof. Richard Demers, Prof Eliabeth Bowman, 1978.)
The following is a brief history of the Lummi people. It combines a shortened version of the Sxeloqst story with the story about the origin of the name 'Lummi'. The text also tells about the relationship of the Lummi language to surrounding native American languages.
In the next activity you will be asked to translate this story from English to Xws7ámeshqen. The English will not be fluent but is there to help you find the right words and conjugations. Before starting the next activity, it is encouraged that you review the story here, first. For the translation activity, each line will be broken up by line number, the same as below.
